Portal priorities: Where does Washington need reinforcements as the spring window opens?
Assessing the Huskies' needs, position by position.
College football’s spring transfer portal window opens on Tuesday, which is one day after the federal tax filing deadline. How many avid fans out there are re-routing their returns directly into the hands of their local donor collective?
The spring window should be particularly active for Washington, which began spring practices with a shorthanded roster and has some distinct holes to fill as coach Jedd Fisch prepares to guide the Huskies into the Big Ten.
Based on players who appear on UW’s roster (and/or are committed in the 2024 class), I have the Huskies at 76 scholarships committed for the 2024 season. That would leave nine spots available for incoming transfers, but of course we know there will be attrition on UW’s side, too, as players begin to learn more about their projected roles (or lack thereof) via spring-practice rep distribution.
Which positions are in need of upgrades? Where might coaches search for plug-and-play starters, or at least some depth players who could push the ceiling higher for their position group? As a reminder, players have this two-week window (April 16-30) to enter the portal, but there is no deadline for when a portal-bound player must commit to (or sign with) a new school, and graduate transfers may enter at any time.
Here’s how I see it, with nine spring practices still to go. Current scholarship counts are in parentheses.
