I try not to take a results based approach to evaluating things, as much as that's possible.
That said, I don't like the 4th and 1 call. A couple of reasons.
1. Even if its true that they didn't execute it correctly, this seems like a fairly complex play to run that I imagine they don't rep that heavily. And with an offensive line that has very limited experience playing together. Doesn't seem like setting your players up for the best chance for success in executing the play. Too high of a degree of difficulty.
2. I couldn't tell this until after the fact, but the middle of the WSU line was really light with basically no 2nd level, with significant overhang to both edges. Seems tailor made to go right up the middle.
On the whole, strangely, I came out of that game thinking that simultaneously this team's ceiling is higher than I thought, and that the floor is lower. When they were executing plays they were largely winning the play. They're clearly capable of competing with most teams on the schedule (which I was not sure of). But they also couldn't execute consistently, so if they can't fix that they're also capable of losing to most of the remaining teams on the schedule. Should be interesting.
