I posted this in the uwdawgpound comments, but figured I would post it here as well, since you two actually interviewed Ryan:
I like Ryan Nani's sense of humor and irreverent takes on college football. But, his comparison for UW football's national image seems a little off the mark ... NC State? All time winning percentage .616 to .514, no major bowl wins or appearances for NC State, last conference championship in 1979, no final top 10 AP rankings? C'mon bro. Did you guys raise your eyebrows at that comparison?
Fun podcast today. I enjoyed Ryan as a guest - I hope you guys will have him back.
Interesting conversation around Ty Willingham and the question about what things people around the country might mock the Huskies for. It's a fair answer, though I'm not sure I believe it. The winless season was fifteen years ago, and if there's still a punchline it's Willingham, not the UW - the string of successful coaches and subsequent recovery of the program is what I think most people remember. The Locker taunt is also a pretty weak spit wad - everyone knows about failed first round picks, and knows that they come from every major program.
I think if there's a true jab from the rest of the country at the Husky program it's actually based in the Petersen years. It's the perception that even our best teams were soft, and couldn't compete with the likes of USC & Alabama in 2016, Penn St. in 2017, or Ohio St. in 2018.
The Dawgs have nothing to prove when it comes to 2008 or Jake Locker's heritage. But that "too soft for the Big Boy schools" reputation hangs around necks like the proverbial albatross, and will until we show we can compete and win some of those match-ups.
