'They're all young,' and Washington's o-linemen are all getting reps, too
Brennan Carroll, Drew Azzopardi and Zach Henning talk, plus a few observations from Thursday's practice.
SEATTLE — It is tempting to regard Drew Azzopardi as the veteran, the lone battle-tested member of a Washington offensive line so young that, through two spring practices, it has at times seen first-team repetitions assigned to a pair of true freshmen early enrollees.
After all, Azzopardi has started … err …
“How many games?” offensive line coach and coordinator Brennan Carroll asks, and you do get the feeling he already knows.
“Six,” comes the response.
“He’s had time on task on the field, so there’s a little bit more comfortability for him,” Carroll acknowledges, but to his point: “They’re all young. He’s young, too.”
And yet, as a third-year sophomore, the San Diego State transfer is the oldest scholarship o-lineman available for the Huskies this spring. That honor would go to fifth-year junior Gaard Memmelaar, were he not recovering from an August injury that wiped out his 2023 season, though even his college experience is limited to four appearances.
