Maybe if we keep losing Coaches and AD's we can make up the Big Ten media shortfall with buyouts!

Husky, Husker... maybe Dannen just made a simple mistake last October.

The search firm they used last time owes them a free one. Standard practice if a hire leaves before 12 mos.

John Conzano reports that Parker Search conducted both UW’s search for a deputy AD and the Nebraska AD search. Apparently one source told him to connect the dots. So my guess is that UW will consider using another organization.

Don’t really get the doom and gloom on any of these 3 coach/AD departures. Seems like there are maybe 15-20 schools in the country who can offer either more money (Nebraska), more prestige, or both (USC and Bama) and it just so happened that 3 of those jobs came open in rapid succession.

We’ve also had 4 Football HC changes in the last 5 years…

Expand full comment

Just to make sure we're getting our "Everything is falling apart" scenario written correctly, these are the UW Football HC changes in the past five years:

1. Petersen to Lake

2. Lake to DeBoer

3. DeBoer to Fisch

Four coaches, three coaching changes.

One dud, three great coaches, at least one future Hall of Famer. We're doing fine.

UW admin need to some honest “self scouting” immediately. One silver lining; when Fisch leaves in December for the Florida job Grubb is already back in Seattle. Go Huskies

Not gonna lie, but that same thought had crossed my mind.

I was at that ‘Desert Social’ yesterday. Upon reflection, it all seems slimy because he was all smiles and looking ‘comfortable’. I think Fisch knew because of his body language. I say good riddance.

Seems a lot had to do with his family. He was on video on king5 saying his family had never moved out here. Also, seems he didn't get a long with his staff much. His assistants didn't know what was going on. He tried to have Softy kicked out of Fisch first presser because Softy had questioned all the moving around Fisch did. He wasnt comfortable here and/or how things were done here.

UW is very much still a destination school. In big10...top academic school. Just came off a playoff run. Even with half share it is still more than what Jen Cohen had to deal with. They do need to get someone as soon as possible though to also get a good HC for basketball. Softy had said an ex football player message him....told him they need to hire Pezman who is at Houston...Wilner also said he needs to be on top of list.

I'm glad someone whom was not a good fit for us and visa versa is gone early and we got 1.5 mill from Neb than for him to stay w wife n kids in Iowa and be miserable and make those around him (boosters and ad staff) same (per boosters and ad staff).

What makes you think Troy & his family will be miserable in Nebraska/Iowa. Different strokes for different folks. If I’m reading you correctly you are ‘glad’ because someone else is to be ‘miserable’. Really?

Miserable here in Seattle while wife n kids in N Iowa. Now they can all be in Nebraska.

I see, yes they’ll all be together now. I’d be miserable too without my family with me ;)

We haven't lost An AD, we have 2 ADs and a head football coach (and a basketball coach) in 6 months time; the only D1 school to do so. We cannot passe the NIL test. No one who is serious about competing in this new NIL/portal work is willing to stay at a school that can't or won't get the money or build the capacity it takes to compete. This latest departure is devasting . . . the perception is no one will come to UW who wants to compete. There is a big payment due next year for the Stadium construction, I question if the currnet UW NIL model is sustainable. The first call for any AD candidate is to Cohen or Dannen, what will they say about the job and suport from UW administration? I'm sorry, really frustrated and this IS a problem for the health of UW athletics.

Remember, our AD that, along with Oregon, negotiated our terms to enter the Big 10, moved onto USC who already had a full media share. I'm sure she, like DB & Alabama, didn't know a thing about her USC offer.

Alabama is paying the first year’s salary for our new football coach. Nebraska is paying the first year’s salary for our next AD. Which school is going to step up and cover the first year of our new basketball coach?

I thought Matt Calkins of the Seattle Times, put it best: "UW is not a destination school." As green as it is in Washington, there always seems to be greener pastures beckoning from somewhere else in the United States. I hate to admit it because of what I've thought all these years. But it appears that he's right.

Expand full comment

I think the whole “destination school” label is really overrated in these times. Every school is susceptible to having their players, coaches and AD’s poached. Trev Alberts is in the Nebraska hall of fame and has his name engraved on their ring of honor and yet he left. DeBoer will probably leave Alabama for the NFL sooner rather than later. Lincoln Riley left blue blood Oklahoma and Mario Cristobal left Oregon.

What should be highly concerning to anyone heading up a conference, or ESPN, or the NCAA is that all this chaos is alienating a huge number of fans, and fans are ultimately the source of every single one of the billions of dollars propping up the sport.

caulkins doesnt know what he's talking about.

Caulkins is a moron. He tries to make clickbait for the ST, and his articles are consistently rubbish.

Christian, why no mention (or speculation) of Troy’s family and young kids likely not wanting to live/be educated in King County? This has to be considered for next candidate, and where they are transplanting in, from. WA State now very Blue and getting more so. That’s not going to fit for the significant others, of some looking at this job.

if someone goes anywhere because of their political beliefs they are fools...and is he is a trumpy and thats important to him then that is his fault.

Expand full comment

Someone might be foolish to go somewhere because of their political beliefs, but it would be quite normal for someone to avoid a specific spot because of politics. Seattle is a joke, politically, across the country.

Expand full comment

You sound like someone without kids, or has been away from the public school system for a spell? It’s okay to be Red or Blue, and then congregate together. Me, I prefer Purple (both for UW and where I live, politically)

Matt Calkins proves at least once a week that he is an idiot, and that statement is proof of his mental incapacity.

"Destination School: A school where parents want to send their students and the students want to go."

The definition isn't very helpful, right? Unfortunately, when people toss around the term. it can mean whatever they want it to. Is Nebraska a Destination School? Is Texas? USC? UCLA? Harvard? Notre Dame? There's nothing close to a consensus. For some people, the University of Hawaii is a Destination School.

But the real reason why Matt Calkins is being an idiot when he makes that statement is that if serious people were trying to make a list of 25 or 30 Destination Schools, most of them would have the UW on that list. They would have agreed on desirable qualities in a university, and VERY few schools would check as many boxes as Washington, nor would they rank as highly in as many categories.

Alabama has a richer football heritage than Washington and... what else? Pretty much nothing else that most people would rate as desirable to have in a "Destination School." Ditto for Nebraska. We still lost our HC and AD to those places. It happens. Doesn't mean they are better schools. I'll take Montlake ten times out of ten.

Expand full comment

I don't care for the self-assured cheap shots Calkins puts out to make a living, but he's not an idiot. He's a smart guy who monetizes callousness.

Expand full comment

Potato, potahto, hahaha...

It wouldn't shock me to learn that the ST sports editor hired Calkins specifically for this s*** stirrer role, and regularly assigns him to write a provative column making a case that even Calkins doesn't believe in himself. Or maybe I'm working too hard to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Expand full comment

Personally, I couldn't trash people in print and then talk to them shortly thereafter and pretend I hadn't cheap-shotted them. But then I have something Calkins doesn't -- an empathy and embarrassment problem. :)

Matt Calkins. Southern Calf mentality, always seems to come out in his columns. Good writer but obviously not native Northwesterner.

If there's somebody with Husky roots who understands the Big 10, and can see around corners as college football collapses and rearranges itself in unpredictable ways, I'd be excited. But I'll take a talented business mind over Husky roots every day of the week.

The thing that amazes me (I came up with no other word) is that Nebraska's last AD exiting was announced on March 13th and one week later (to the day) they can announce that they have concluded contractual negotiations with the sitting AD at another Power 5 school, buyout and all. They must have initiated contact no later than last Friday and Boom!. So now UW will start the 90-120 day process of selecting another AD to oversee the 2024 football season before leaving for some school in the SEC.

My comment as too. Sort of. But Jedd Fisch had good reason to leave Tucson.

He got a heck of a deal financially to live in a much less expensive city. He should be set for life with that contract. Choosing that deal over having to navigate a tough financial situation for 6 years makes sense, especially considering we are no longer in a period of time where loyalty means anything.
