Washington makes it 12-0 with Apple Cup buzzer-beater
Grady Gross plays the hero, Kalen DeBoer makes the call of his life.
SEATTLE — The sun had set over Husky Stadium, and the students had invaded the field, and the kicker was signing autographs. For a moment, the crowd thrust him atop their shoulders. Also, he broke down when he saw his mom, and when Grady Gross finally made it into the locker room, the head coach told the entire team he’d been put on scholarship.
These are the memories that make a rivalry, and which will be lost in the post-Pac-12 timeline, no matter that the series will continue as a nonconference affair. Games won in the September heat might count the same as those played in the November chill, but there’s something different about a regular-season finale that requires an early-morning tailgate and ends after the lake has gone black, and this probably was the last of those between Washington and Washington State.
