Boston and Coleman know the right recipe for NIL success. This type of commitment and communication sells lots more jerseys and advertising than the rent-a-player revolving door approach. A player that has spent more than one year to build a relationship with a fanbase and that folks know will graduate (or at least finish their college career) at the same school, carry better long term NIL potential. I can now feel ok about buying my kids a Boston or Coleman jersey for Christmas (and have to cancel my House jersey for myself, 😖). Jk.
You can get a snapshot of your program’s health during the early portal. If you’re losing several starters, something is really wrong. Either your staff is questionable at best, or your program is not well funded.
If you lose one or two starters, there’s most likely a good reason, like losing a coach or coordinator to a better position. In our case, we’re losing our DC and probably our LB coach to boot.
If you can keep your starters and add the necessary talent, your staff and program are in a good spot.
We’re not quite there yet, but I’m optimistic we’re going in the right direction. I hope I’m not wrong on that.
Read the Seattle Times story on this press conference and you took it multi-dimensionally higher, Christian… Thank you for the great quotes and analysis.
The portal is wrecking college football, but I do like the way it gives good players a chance to find playing time. Some have suggested that the portal is an escape route for players who aren't willing to work hard enough to see the field as Huskies. And that's probably true in some cases. But judging talent and competitive fire is difficult. And when coaches make mistakes, they sometimes let their egos get in the way of reassessment. When that's the case, I'm glad the portal can also serve as an escape route from rigid coaches.
To many the Portal is a like the dream of stardom and riches. I'm not getting it done or noticed enough here, so instead of hitting the weight room or backing away from the desert tray, it's easy to imagine a "new start" making all the difference. Really, refreshing to hear from two players like Coleman and Boston who are appreciative of their school and working hard to be the best and enjoying the experience.
So I thought you had to enter the portal before a team could contact you. Guess I'm mistaken. Didn't know McAllister went to Nebraska. Not upset he left but seems very lateral for him maybe even downgraded.
I agree most going into portal are being told by staff....you might want to hit the portal.
House said he got an offer from north carolina....well that was such a big shock NOT. Pretty much solidifies Belichick going there after the bowl game. Would assume Fisch knows and probably has talked to the replacement.
NCAA f'ed everything up years ago by not allowing players to get jobs or to get any kind of endorsements. Could have had that and prevented the portal.
The portal had nothing to do with NIL. It was the NCAA way of dealing with all the blowback on how draconian they managed approving transfers without having to sit at least a year. Then a couple years later NIL became a thing and the perfect storm had been created. Players had basically unfettered ability to transfer and now they can get openly wooed to do so for cash.
Getting wooed before entering the portal is against the rules, but in reality we don’t have any hard and fast rules anymore. It’s basically whatever you can get away with.
“DFL” still has meaning to some. And aren’t we thankful!? Great story Christian. The rare piece of feel good news in an ocean of fan anxiety.
Think you’ll ever get tired of typing, “Australian punter Dusty Zimmer” because I’m never gonna get tired of reading it.
DAWGS. That's it.
Beautiful, man.
